A Pause After Landing: Laksa and Champagne | Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge (Changi T2)

After BR215 touched down in Singapore, I made my way to the SilverKris Lounge in Terminal 2. A bowl of laksa, a glass of Charles Heidsieck and a hot shower turned a five-hour layover into a small journey of its own. Location, entry eligibility, facilities and dining notes are all here, for fellow Singapore Airlines travellers planning an unhurried pause of their own.

BR215 touched down in Singapore at ten past two in the afternoon. Leaving the aircraft, I was in no rush to head into the city — the next leg of my journey was still a few hours away, so I made my way to the SilverKris Lounge in Terminal 2 and stayed for nearly five hours. Rather than a layover, it felt like a blank page I had left in the trip, to be taken slowly.

Singapore Airlines' lounges at Changi are gathered in Terminals 2 and 3. The SilverKris Lounge in T2 sits on Level 3 after immigration, near the E gates, on the same floor as the KrisFlyer Gold Lounge, the two sharing one entrance area. The signpost makes the directions plain: SilverKris is to the left, where Suites, First Class, Business Class and PPS Club travellers enter; if you hold Star Alliance Gold status and are flying Economy, your lounge is the Gold Lounge on the right.

Once inside, I like to walk a full circle first, taking in the whole space before I sit down. The layout here is simple: the buffet occupies the centre, and the seating spreads out along the windows. Orchids sit on surface after surface — a Singapore lounge, it seems, is never quite complete without them. Beginning with the drinks: in the ice bucket stood a bottle of Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve; spirits were lined up along the bar counter, and the wines waited in a cabinet beside it — go and pour yourself a glass whenever you fancy one.

The spread was complete, and my stomach was thoroughly satisfied. Behind the hot buffet, chefs kept the dishes replenished; at the noodle bar, display samples showed what could be ordered, each dish made up for you to see first; sushi was laid out in a row; salads and fruit were arranged in tiers, and three flavours of ice cream lay in the freezer cabinet. But the star of the day was the laksa. The coconut broth arrived with prawns, fish cake and laksa leaves, a small dish of condiments — fried shallots, garlic and the like — on the side — and I paired it with a glass of champagne for myself, eating slowly by the window. Outside was the terminal's long sweep of rooflines; inside, all was quiet. That, I think, is why I love lounges: they give days spent in transit a place to pause.

The buffet changes its dishes with the hour. After the afternoon-tea round, I went back for another look at the live-cooking station: an array of sauces was laid out, there for the choosing, and the menu card for the Japanese curry stood alongside — Japanese Curry Rice with Chicken Karaage. Next to it was a blanched-greens station, iceberg lettuce with soy sauce, garlic oil, oyster sauce and chicken floss, to season as you pleased. Before long, the curry rice with chicken karaage was set down in front of me. On a journey, it is these small, freshly cooked hot dishes that comfort the most.

Fed, I wandered the lounge slowly. The long corridor was quiet; the washroom had stone counters and generous mirrors, convenient for freshening up. The facilities listed on the official website also include a nursery, meeting rooms and Wi-Fi, so those who need to work, or are travelling with children, are well looked after. I stayed from early afternoon into the evening, and my last errand was a hot shower.
