When I woke again, the cabin was still steeped in night. The second meal arrived quietly — no rattle of carts, only a tray set down gently, as if careful not to startle anyone still half asleep.

The main was a bowl of seafood noodles: a clear, savoury broth, the noodles soaked through with the taste of the sea, prawns springy, squid rings crisp, and a small dish of chilli sauce beside it — bold, but measured. With a hot coffee and a glass of cool water, it had everything a second meal on a night flight should have, and none of the haste it so often gets.

After breakfast, the crew brought the Australian arrival card. Filling in a form at altitude, pen scratching softly, the journey suddenly felt close to landing — a few hours earlier I was still among Singapore's lights; now I was slowly writing my name for another city.

On the screen, the route had already passed Canberra: 7:39 in the morning, Sydney time, with arrival expected at 7:47. Outside the window it was still deep blue, but the land beneath the wing was already beginning to glow.

Before landing, a moment at the little mirror beside the seat to put myself back together. The vanity mirror is set into the seat's side, its light soft, the controller at hand — small, unremarkable details that are, on a long flight, the most practical kind of tenderness. However deep the sleep, one should wake with grace.

At 7:47, the A380's main wheels met the ground so lightly there was barely a tremor. A journey that began in darkness had set down, steady, into the morning light.
Inside the terminal, the first thing to greet us was this wall of letters — SYD, in pink, against warm timber. Like a soft-spoken good morning.

The arrivals hall was still quiet at that hour, banners hanging beneath the high ceiling, footsteps unhurried. This city's tempo, from the moment you enter it, is an unhurried one.

The baggage belt turned slowly, and the night's flight drew to its close. There was no impatience in the waiting — Sydney's sunshine was just outside the doors.

On the luggage tag, the orange priority label from the earlier flight was still attached — it had travelled with this suitcase from Taoyuan, through Singapore, all the way to Sydney. The relay of the journey ends here; Sydney's days are only beginning.

Walking out of the terminal, the sun was exactly right. We left in the dark and arrived in the light — this night flight south had landed, gently and surely, in the morning.
