Both lounges visited (the previous two articles), dinner eaten — time to walk to gate 37. Tonight's final leg is Qantas QF149, Sydney to Auckland, scheduled to depart at 19:15 and land after midnight. On the gate screen, economy boarding has already begun.

Tonight's aircraft is a Boeing 737-800. My seat is 5F, a window seat near the front of economy. I settle in: the screen glows with its welcome page, headphones wait on the seat. A 737 cabin is not large, but the light outside is lovely — tails of a dozen airlines lined up on the apron, like a quiet gathering.

We pushed back more than ten minutes early, and took off from runway 34R at 19:21. Flying east should mean chasing the night — but after the climb, a whole sunset was still spread above the sea of clouds: gold, orange, deep blue, layered to the edge of the sky. On this crossing of the Tasman, the sunset kept us company for a long, long time.

Dinner came soon after takeoff: a hot stew with roast potatoes, peas and carrots, then cheese and rice crackers, and two mini bottles of red wine. On its trans-Tasman routes, Qantas serves economy a complete dinner — not a snack, but a meal you sit down to properly. A film played on the screen; outside, the sky slowly went black.

The route crosses the International Date Line, and Auckland runs ahead of Sydney — we touched down at 00:09 on 19 March. Rain outside, a wet apron. Down the arrivals corridor, the signs carry Chinese characters, and the midnight airport is perfectly quiet. Sydney's long day — a lounge dinner, a sunset above the clouds — walks all the way into Auckland's midnight.
